The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has its roots in the Pondicherry School of Medicine established in 1823 by the French government. In 1956 the foundation stone was laid for a new medical school and in 1964 a hospital was created. inaugurated. JIPMER became an Institution of National Importance under the Department of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India in 2008.

It is an institution established for teaching, research and patient care in health areas. JIPMER covers 192 hectares.The facility houses an administration building, a university center, a nursing school, seven hospital buildings, seven support services buildings and four apartment complexes.

There are 12 main types of courses in medicine, nursing and allied health sciences, covering all disciplines of healthcare, from basic training to super specialist training. JIPMER is one of the few institutions in the country offering undergraduate through Super Specialty & Sub-specialties, conducting innovative research and providing high quality professional care.

The model of providing free specialized healthcare while maintaining quality and safety makes JIPMER unique in the country.
