In very ancient times, this area was covered with inaccessible forests, to which non-Aryan tribes repeatedly retreated, refusing to submit to the constant advance of the Aryans. The entire area of Chhotanagpur known as the Jharkhand (forest area) was probably outside of Hindu influence in ancient India.
Throughout the Turkish-Afghan period (until 1526), the region remained almost immune to external influences. It was not until the accession of Akbar of Delhi in 1556 that Muslim influence entered Jharkhand, then known to the Mughals as Kokrah. In 1585 Akbar sent a force under Shahbaz Khan to reduce the Rajah of Chotanagpur to a tributary position.
After Akbar’s death in 1605, the region probably regained its independence. This required an expedition in 1616 by Ibrahim Khan Fateh Jang, governor of Bihar and brother of Queen Noorjehan. Ibrahim Khan defeated and captured Durjan Sal, 46th Rajah of Chotanagpur. He was imprisoned for 12 years but was later released and restored to the throne after demonstrating his ability to tell a real diamond from a fake one.
In 1632 Chotanagpur was granted as Jagir to the governor of Patna for an annual payment of Rs.136,000. This was increased to 161,000 rupees in 1636. During the reign of Muhammad Shah (1719-1748), Sarballand Khan, then governor of Bihar, marched against the Raja of Chotanagpur and won his submission.Another expedition was led by Fakhr Ud Doula, governor of Bihar, in 1731.
