On April 1, 1948, the civil district of Raipur was divided and a civil district called Durg was established in Rajnandgaon. Shri PVLele was the first district & Session Judge of District Court Durg on in 1948. Rajnandgaon District was established on January 26, 1948. 1973, from the division of Durg District and Rajnandgaon Civil District, was established on April 12, 1975, from the division of Durg Civil District.Until the change, the District and Session Magistrate’s Office was located in Rajnandgaon.

The foundation stone of the current Durg District Court building was laid by the Hon. Shri Judge Prabhakar Keshav Tare Chief Justice of Madhya-Pradesh on January 17, 1974 and the building was inaugurated on February 9, 1977 by the Hon. Shri Judge Shivdayal Parmeswar Dayal Shrivastav Chief Judge of Madhya Pradesh.
