The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air force of the Indian Armed Forces. Their main mission is to protect Indian airspace and wage war in armed conflicts. Formed officially as the Auxiliary Air Force of the British Empire on8October1932,they honored the Indian Air Service with the prefix Royal during World War II.

After India’s independence from Britain in 1947, the Royal Indian Air Force name was retained and served on be half of the th Dominion of India. With the transition to the republic in 1950, the royal prefix was abolished. Since 1950 the IAF has been involved in four wars with neighboring Pakistan. Other major IAF operations include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus and Operation Poomalai.

The IAF’s mission extends beyond combatingenemy forces by participating in United Nations peacekeeping missions. The President of India holds the rank of Supreme Allied Commander of the IAF. As of July 1, 2017, the Indian Air Forcehad170,576troops. The Chief of Staff, Air Marshal, is a four-star officer and is responsible for most of the Air Force’soperationalleadership. There is never more than one operational ACM in the IAF.

The rank of Air Marshal has been bestowedonArjanSingh by the President of India onlyonce in history. On 26 January 2002, Singh became the IAF’s first and only five-star officer.
