Pune Armed Forces Medical College is a premier medical institution in India. AFMC is the first medical college established by the armed forces in Asia. The college is a unique institution where medical education is combined with education related to the health needs of the defense forces. AFMC has been consistently ranked among the top 3 medical colleges in India in surveys published by reputed news magazines for the past decade.

It was accredited with an A rating by the NAAC and during its recent re-accreditation was awarded a cumulative score of 3.51 out of four, which was the highest ever awarded to any institution in India. The Medical College of the Armed Forces was founded on May 1, 19 8. The institution trains undergraduate and graduate students in medicine, undergraduate and graduate students in nursing, graduate students in dentistry, and paramedics. Patient care is an integral part of the curriculum and sub-hospitals use AFMC knowledge.

The department is responsible for equipping the entire group of experts and super experts with the defense forces by providing them with advanced training. Thus, AFMC forms the backbone of quality professional medical care provided to the armed forces. Colonel PP Chowdry, MC was the first Commanding Officer of the AFMC. The university is located in an eco-friendly campus spread over 119 hectares near Ramtekri in East Pune. In addition to the well-maintained gardens, the campus has an interesting mix of heritage buildings and ultra-modern facilities.

The campus has all the essential amenities. In addition to lecture halls, laboratories, exhibition halls, museums and auditoriums, fully furnished student accommodation is provided. On-campus housing is also provided for faculty and staff. The campus has a swimming pool, cinema, cafe, village shops, a single work canteen and a shopping centre, a day care center and a day care centre, religious services, a gymnasium and facilities for all outdoor and indoor sports. . The college is famous for its Graduate Wing which was inaugurated on August , 1962 by the then Defense Minister of India, Shri V K Krishna Menon.

AFMC currently has a total of 29 divisions. AFMC academic departments are well equipped with dedicated staff. Lectures, exercises, demonstrations and clinics are well planned and executed throughout the year, except for two short holidays. Clinical students receive training in affiliated hospitals. These include Command Hospital (Southern Command), Military Hospital (Cardiothoracic Centre), Military Hospital Kirkee, Artificial Limb Center and Cantonment General Hospital, Pune. AFMC has produced more than 6,500 doctors since 1966, when the first batch passed. The 6 sets that left the portals of this institution serve the people.
