Electricity Distribution Companies, also known as ESCOM, are responsible for the distribution of electricity in the state of Karnataka. It originated from the Karnataka Electricity Commission. This distribution unit was established to provide efficient and reliable power supply to the people of the state of Karnataka. In 1999, Karnataka began a major reform of the electricity sector.

As a first step, Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB) was abolished and replaced by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL). This was followed by the establishment of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) in November 1999. In the next phase of the reform process, the transmission and distribution business run by KPTCL was disbanded in June 2002. Electricity distribution companies were formed in Karnataka.
