Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a multi-campus public university in Mumbai, India. It is Asia’s oldest professional training institute for social work and was established in 1936 in the then Bombay Presidency of British India by the Sir Dorabji Tata Foundation as the Sir Dorabji Tata School of Social Work. In 19 , the institute was officially named the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and in 196 , TISS was declared a university by the Government of India under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956.

In 195 , TISS moved from its earlier Nagpada and then Andheri campuses to its permanent campus at Deonar, Mumbai (now the main campus). In 2001, the Deonar campus was expanded with Malti Jal and Jal A. D. Naoroji Campus Annex, now known as New Campus. TISS established a rural campus in Tuljapur, Maharashtra in 1986 and two off-campus campuses in Guwahati and Hyderabad in 2011.

In addition to these campuses, TISS provides teaching, training, research and development support from centers established across India, including in Leh. , Ladakh and Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar. TISS’ academic programs focus on the social sciences and offer PhDs in environmental studies, management and labor studies, disaster studies, development studies, education, gender studies, health studies, law, media and cultural studies, public policy, rural development and social work. . .

Since its inception, TISS has focused on field operations, including response to disasters such as the Partition of India, the Bhopal disaster and the Uttarakhand floods. Some TISS initiatives have shaped public policy in India, such as India’s labor protection laws. Notable organizations and individuals have praised the social service work of TISS, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Jawaharlal Nehru, Niels Bohr and the United Nations.
