The North-Eastern Hill University Act (2 /1973), passed by both Houses of Parliament, received the assent of the President of India on 26 May 1973. It was published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary Letter) on 26 May 1973 along with the Act. First Schedule to the Act Containing the Statutes of the University. The purpose of the university, as stated in the Act, is “to disseminate and promote knowledge by providing opportunities for study and research in those fields of study that it deems appropriate; to pay special attention to the improvement of social and economic conditions, to the well.

Being of the people of the mountainous regions of the Northeast region and especially to the spiritual, academic and cultural progress.” The university’s jurisdiction originally extended to the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland and the former union territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. With the establishment of Nagaland University on 6 September 199 , NEHU’s jurisdiction in Nagaland ended. Similarly, with the establishment of Mizoram University from June 2001, NEHU’s jurisdiction over Mizoram ended. Arunachal Pradesh has its own university.

However, North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology in Arunachal Pradesh is affiliated to NEHU. Initially, the academic departments and administration of the University of Shillong operated from rented buildings. However, soon enough NEHU bought two prime properties in the city, one belonging to the former Maharaja of Mayurbhanji and the other to the Rani of Bijni.

Academic departments then moved to these two locations. Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government acquired a large piece of land (about 1,225 acres) for Umshing University to set up a permanent campus, just outside the city limits. This picturesque land, gently rolling and densely forested – an ideal location for a university – was a gift from the Meghalaya government. Land surveying and the general plan of the university were completed during the VI five-year plan; and construction began modestly during the VII Plan period.

By 1991, several faculty residence permit cards, men’s and women’s dormitories, a ring road, a modern workshop of the university’s scientific study center, a regionally designed equipment center and a guest room will be completed. House-cum-Seminar Complex, a complex of buildings for research departments with its own electricity and water supply system, the campus acquired the visible form of an attractive university.

In 2005, the Mayurbhanj Compex at Nongthymmai was handed over to the Government of Meghalaya when the departments were shifted to the permanent campus at Umshing. Currently, with the exception of some centers located in the Bijni Compex, almost all departments of the university are located in buildings on the permanent campus. We now have access to the internet through our VSAT, to which all departments on campus are connected.

We are working to improve our selection of internet connections. The Department of Telecommunications has installed a fully automated call center on campus. It is the first of its kind in a university in the region. Much of the campus development work over the past few years has been made possible by the generous support the university has received from the Government of India from its non-rotation fund.
