The Medal of Honor (MOH) is the highest military decoration of the United States military and is awarded to American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardsmen and coast guardsmen for acts of bravery. The medal is usually awarded by the President of the United States (Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces) and is presented “on behalf of the Congress of the United States.

” It is sometimes called the “Congressional Medal of Honor”. On behalf of the Department of Defense, the Secretary of the Army informed Congress that the term “Congressional Medal of Honor” in the statute was “incorrect” and that it was “inappropriate to change the name of the medal.” to the “Congressional Medal of Honor” because each award is made on behalf of Congress through a process authorized by the military chain of command, not by Congress”.

There are three different variations of the medal: one for the Army, awarded to soldiers, one for the Navy, Marines, Marines, and Coast Guard, and one for the Air Force, awarded to pilots and guardsmen. The Navy adopted the Medal of Honor in 1861, followed shortly by the Army version in 1862.

The Air Force used the Army version until they received their own distinctive version in 1965. The Medal of Honor is the oldest continuously awarded US military combat award. The President usually presents the Medal of Honor in a formal ceremony intended to express the gratitude of the American people, with posthumous presentations to loved ones.

According to the American Medal of Honor Historical Society, 3,535 Medals of Honor have been awarded since the medal’s inception, with more than 0% awarded for actions during the American Civil War. Notably, however, after Congress passed the amendment in 1917, 911 Army medals were revoked, and several Navy medals were revoked before the turn of the century—none of which are included in that total except for those that were later reinstated In 1990 Congress appointed on March 25 every year as National Medal of Honor Day.
