An Act of Parliament in 1956 established the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as an autonomous body of national importance and defined its aims and functions. According to this law, the institute awards its medical degrees and other scientific awards.

Diplomas awarded by the Institute under the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences Act are recognized medical qualifications under the Indian Medical Council Act and notwithstanding the provisions of therein are deemed to be included in Schedule 1 of that Act to ensure that they hold privileges associated with associated with the relevant awards of recognized universities in India.
