About BARC Recruitment 2023 – 105 Junior Research Posts Apply Online IndGovtjobs
Nuclear power plays a key role in reducing the carbon intensity of India’s power sector. Thermal energy from all sources is 23 ,0 8 MW, which is 60% of the total installed capacity, while renewable energy is 95,875 MW (25%), 51,220 MW (13%) and 6,780 MW (up to 2%). Source National Power Portal. Although renewable energy sources are environmentally friendly, they are intermittent sources of energy. Nuclear power, a continuous and concentrated energy source with a low carbon footprint, is an integral part of India’s energy mix to meet India’s international environmental obligations.
India has limited domestic reserves of uranium while we have abundant thorium. To use thorium, our designers designed a three-phase nuclear power program. Home-built Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) form the backbone of India’s Phase I nuclear power program. PHWRs use domestic natural uranium (UO2) containing 0.7% fissile 235U and 99.3#8U as fuel and heavy water as moderator and primary coolant. Spent fuel reprocessing and waste management from PHWR plants are important parts of the three-phase core program. These technologies were developed with full indigenous efforts.
Uranium and plutonium are chemically separated and recycled, other radioactive fission products have been separated and sorted according to their half-life and radioactivity and stored with minimal environmental impact. The 239Pu separated from spent nuclear fuel is used as fuel in Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs), which are part of the second stage of the nuclear program. FBR fuel is designed so that the fuel core is surrounded by a 238U cladding. 238U undergoes transformation to produce fresh 239Pu.
So FBR not only consumes 239Pu, but also produces 239Pu more than it consumes. But FBR technology is very complex and only developed countries like USA, UK, France, Japan and Soviet Union have mastered this technology.
