Benares Hindu University is an internationally renowned scholarly temple in the holy city of Varanasi. This creative and innovative university was founded in 1916 by the great nationalist leader Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in collaboration with great figures like Dr. Annie Besant, which she considered the University of India. Banaras Hindu University was established under Parliamentary Legislation (BHU).Act of 1915.
It played a prominent role in the independence movement and became the largest center of learning in India. It has produced many great freedom fighters and builders of modern India and contributed immensely to the advancement of the nation through many renowned scholars, artists, scientists and technologists gracing its portals. The main campus area of this leading central university stretches over 1,300 acres with well-developed roads, greenery, a temple, an airstrip and buildings that are an architectural delight.
The campus airport was commissioned for military flight training during World War II.Another university campus will be built in Barkachha in Mirzapur district on an area of 2,700 hectares. Consisting of 6 institutes, 14 faculties, 144 departments, 4 interdisciplinary centers, a founding college for women, and 3 branch schools, the university covers a wide range of subjects covering all areas of humanities, social sciences, technology, medicine, science, and fine and performing arts.
It has 6 advanced study centers, 10 faculties under the Special Assistance Program, and a large number of specialized research centers. All four colleges in the city are affiliated with the university. Bharat Kala Bhavan, a renowned university museum, is a treasure trove of rare collections.The teaching hospital with 927 beds is equipped with all modern facilities.
