The empowerment of women is one of the key development initiatives of the Odisha government. It is well known that the economic empowerment of women contributes significantly to their social empowerment. Therefore, helping women become financially independent by enabling them to work independently and earn an income has become a top priority.

In 2001, for example, it was decided to promote women’s self-help groups (WSHG) under the umbrella of the “Mission Shakti” program as a central strategy for achieving the status of women. “Mission Shakti” is a self-help mission to empower women through the sponsorship of Women’s Self Help Groups (WSHG) to carry out various socio-economic activities, which was launched on March 8, 2001 in the state of International Women’s Day.

The Shakti Mission has a clear goal of empowering women through income-generating activities through the provision of credit and market connections. The WSHG’s empowerment of women as part of the Shakti Mission is the government’s flagship program. It is predicted that over time more & more women would be part of the WSHG. , To date, nearly 70 lakh women have been organized into 6 lakh groups in all blocks and municipal local authorities across the state.

In order to strengthen the activities of the existing WSHG and to provide impetus for the establishment of new WSHGs, constant activities and monitoring are carried out throughout the year.To this end, the Department of Child Development and Shakti Mission works.
