Coal India Limited (CIL), a state-owned coal mining company, was established in November 1975. With an output of 79 million tonnes (MT) in its initial year, CIL is the world’s largest single coal producer today. One of the largest corporate employers with 239,210 employees (April 1, 2023). CIL operates through its subsidiaries in 83 mining districts in eight (8) states of India. Coal India Limited has 322 mines (as on 1 April 2023) of which 138 are underground, 171 open pit and 13 mixed mines and also operates other facilities such as workshops, hospitals etc.

CIL has 21 educational institutions and 76 vocational training centers. Indian Institute of Coal Management (IICM) as a premier management training center – India’s largest corporate training institute – operates under CIL and runs multi-disciplinary programmes. CIL is a Maharatna company – a privileged status granted by the Government of India in selecting state-owned enterprises to expand and become global giants.

The selected club has only ten members from more than three hundred central public sector companies of the country.

CIL has eleven wholly owned subsidiaries viz. Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Bharat Coalfields Limited (BCCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), CIL Navi Karniya Urja Limited for development of non-conventional/clean and renewable energy and CIL Solar PV Limited for development of solar modules.

CIL has a foreign subsidiary Coal India Africana Limitada (CIAL) in Mozambique. In addition, CIL has five joint ventures – Hindustan Urvarak and Rasayan Limited, Talcher Fertilizers Ltd., CIL NTPC Urja Pvt. Ltd., Coal Lignite Urja Vikas Private Limited and International Coal Venture Private Limited. The mines of Assam viz. North Eastern Coalfields (NEC) are directly managed by CIL. Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, has four ( ) subsidiaries, SECL has two (2) subsidiaries and CCL has one (1) subsidiary.
