The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is a federal police organization in India, reporting to the Government of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It is one of the central armed police forces. The CRPF’s primary mission is to assist stαte/union territories in law enforcement operations to maintain law and order and combat insurgency.

It consists of the Central Police Reserve (regular) and the Central Police Reserve (auxiliary police). Incorporated 27 July 1939 as the Crown Representative Police.After India’s independence, it became the Central Reserve Police following the passage of the CRPF Act on December 28, 1949. Alongside law and order and counterinsurgency functions, the CRPF plays an increasing role in India’s general elections.

This is particularly true in the former state of Jammu αnd Kashmir, Bihar and the Northeast, where unrest and often violent conflict reign. During the September 1999 parliamentary elections, the CRPF played an important role in the security arrangements of . Recently, CRPF contingents have also been deployed in UN missions. With 246 battalions and various other entities, the CRPF ranks as India’s largest centralized armed police force and as of 2019 has an authorized strength of over 300,000.
