The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) was established on August 3, 1954 under the direct authority of the Prime Minister by Presidential Order. Pursuant to the resolution establishing the AEC, the Secretary of the Government of India, Department of Atomic Energy, is the ex officio Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.

The DAE deals with the development of nuclear energy technology, applications of radiation technologies in agriculture, medicine, industry and basic research. The DAE comprises five research centres, three industrial organisations, five public sector companies and three service organisations.

It has two councils under its auspices for the promotion and funding of non-university research in nuclear and related fields, mathematics and a national institute (recognized as a university). It also supports eight internationally renowned institutes in the fields of basic scientific research, astronomy, astrophysics, cancer research and education. It also has an education company under its umbrella that provides educational facilities for the children of DAE employees.
