West Singhbhum is one of the oldest districts in Jharkhand. After the British conquest of Kolhan in 1837, a new district called Singhbhum was established with Chaibasa as its seat. Later three districts namely East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharsawan were separated from the former district of Singhbhum with Chaibasa becoming the seat of West Singhbhum.
West Singhbhum District is the southern part of the new state of Jharkhand and the largest district in the state. district spans 210 58′ & 230 36′ N and 850 0′ & 86054′ east longitude.The area is at an altitude of 244 m asl. and covers an area of 5,290.89 m². Kilometre. The district is bordered by Khunti District to the north, Saraikela-Kharsawan District to the east, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundargarh Districts in Orissa to the south, and Simdega and Sundargarh Districts (in Orissa) to the west. The district is full of hills alternating with valleys, steep mountains and dense montane forests.Most of the population of West Singhbhum district are tribal people.
