Rangareddy District was established on August 15, 1978 by removing part of the urban Hyderabad Taluk and merging rural and urban areas of the remaining Hyderabad Taluk. The history of Rangaredda is therefore none other than the history of Hyderabad which is detailed here.

In the initial stages, the district was called Hyderabad (rural). It was later changed to Konda Venkata Rangareddy District and later Rangareddy District. Named after Dean , freedom fighter, patriot and late Deputy Minister of State of Andhra Pradesh, K.V. Rangaredi. The history of the district is inextricably linked to the rise and fall of the various kingdoms that flourished in the Deccan through medieval and modern times.

The Kakatiyas of Warangal were the first important rulers of this part of the country between 1150 and 1323 AD.Muhammad-bin-Tughlak, who broke the power of Kakatiya in 1323, stayed for some time, after which the royal court of Bahmani sultans held the Deccan for about two centuries. After their fall from power, Barid Shahi’s kingdom grew and shrank for unknown reasons around 1609.Next came the famous Qutub Shahi of Golconda (1512-1687), whose reign opened a major chapter in the annals of that district.

Under the rule of the fifth descendant of this dynasty, Muhammad Quli, the nucleus of the city of Hyderabad, famous for its magnificent residences, was laid in 1589. However, at the end of the 17th century, the Golconda fortress fell to the sword of Aurangzeb (1687), who made it an inseparable part of the Mughal Empire and named ChinKalich Khan (Asaf Jah) as Subedar of the Deccan, and became his one-time lord of the Deccan after defeating Mubariz Khan, whom he had secretly tutored from the Mughal Emperor, inflicted a crushing defeat at the famous Battle of Shakarkheda on October 11, 1724.

This battle was renamed Fathkhera from Nizam-ul-Mulka, marking the founding of the Asaf Jahi dynasty and thus the founding of the autonomous Deccan.It also marks the end of the Middle Ages in Deccan history and the beginning of the modern era, which marked the end of Mughal hegemony and the final establishment of the rule of Asaf Jahi.
