Purbi Singhbhum District is located in the southeast corner of Jharkhand. It was formed on January 16, 1990 following the lockdown of nine blocks of Old Singhbhum. From the point of view of industrial and mining development, this district occupies a leading position in Jharkhand. Before independence, the entire area of ​​Purbi Singhbhum District was part of Old Manbhum District and Old Dhalbhum Domain.

After independence it was merged with the larger Singhbhum.The total geographical area of ​​the district is approximately 3,533 m². km or about 2.03% of the total area of ​​the state. About 53% of the district’s total area is occupied by the remains of mountains and hills made of granite, gneiss and schist. It is part of the Chhotanagpur Plateau.The Dalma Mountains stretch from west to east and are covered with dense northern forest. The Subbernarekha River flows west-southeast.

The region is rich in minerals which are found in abundance. Administratively, this district was divided into two sub-districts: Dhalbhum and Ghatshila. The district consists of eleven blocks: Golmuri-cum-Jugsalai (Jamshedpur), Potka, Patamda and Boram in Dhalbhum subdivision and Ghatshila, Musabani, Dumaria, Baharagora, Dhalbhumgarh, Chakulia and Gurabandha in Ghatshila subdivision.There are 231 Panchayat and about 1,810 income villages, of which 1,669 income villages are inhabited and the remaining 141 income villages are uninhabited. The head office of this district is Jamshedpur.

The district’s climate is temperate. Annual rainfall varies between 1200mm and 1400mm. The area is in the sphere of influence of the south-west monsoon, so there are occasional heavy rains from July to September. In summer, the maximum temperature is 40-45 degrees Celsius, while in winter, the minimum temperature is 8 degrees Celsius.The district is rich in minerals and found in abundance. The most important ores are iron ore, copper, uranium, gold and zincite.
