The hospital was founded in 1 and had 350 beds. The hospital is affiliated to the Delhi University College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital. In 2006, it was reported to have almost 1,000 beds.[3] Later figures indicate a capacity of 1,700 beds. UCMS was established in 1971 through the efforts of the Health Minister of New Delhi. The minister offered to provide medical education to any student who meets the requirements and wants to become a doctor.
The criteria were strict (at least 60% overall) but still resulted in around 100 students being left out despite Delhi having two medical colleges – MAMC and LHMC. This year, classes began in the interim chemistry department at the North Campus of Delhi University. It was to become the UCMS of tomorrow. After that, its clinical posts (internships) started being in Meerut Medical College.
It was soon transferred to Safdarjung Hospital in South Delhi. In 1986, it moved to its present location in Dilshad Garden and merged with Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital as a teaching hospital with 1000 beds. Thus GTBH was actually created in 1986, although construction ended in 1979 and some sections were operational by 1 .
