HAL was founded by Walchand Hirachand as Hindustan Aircraft Limited in Bangalore on 23 December 19 0 with the then Kingdom of Mysore.[10] Walchand Hiracand became the president of the company. The company’s office was opened in a bungalow called “Eventide” on Domluri road. The organization and equipment of the Bangalore factory was created by William D. Pawley of the Intercontinental Aircraft Corporation of New York.

Pawley acquired a large number of machine tools and equipment from the United States. The Indian government bought a third of the company and by April 19 1 invested ₹25,000, believing it to be a strategic necessity. The government’s decision was largely motivated by increasing British supplies of military equipment in Asia to counter the growing threat posed by Imperial Japan during World War II. The Kingdom of Mysore provided two leaders, with Air Marshal John Higgins as the permanent leader.

The first aircraft built was the Harlow PC-5 [11] On 2 April 19 2, the government announced that the company was nationalized after buying the shares of Seth Walchand Hirachand and other promoters to allow them to operate freely. The Kingdom of Mysore refused to sell its share in the company, but transferred control to the British Government of India. The plant expanded rapidly and became a center for the overhaul and repair of American aircraft and was known as the 8 th Air Depot. The first aircraft to be refurbished was the Consolidated PBY Catalina, followed by all aircraft flying in India and Burma. After returning to Indian control two years later, the factory became one of the largest restoration and repair organizations in the East. During the post-war reorganization, the company built railroad cars as a temporary measure.
