The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Amarkantak was established by an Act of the Indian Parliament. It was established under the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act 2007 and came into force in July 2008. The university has nationwide jurisdiction and is fully funded by central government through the University Grants Commission.

The university fulfills the long-cherished dream of the tribes of higher education. Aims and Goals – Tribal peoples have rich cultural heritages and manual skills but remain marginalized in higher education and other walks of life.Now, in the current era of globalization, the world has shrunk to a village while society has evolved into technology. But the tribes that are literally custodians of Native American culture are lagging far behind in this race to progress.

In order to rescue them from the current difficult situation, the university has set the following goals: Providing educational opportunities, especially higher education and research institutions, mainly to the tribal people of India. Disseminating and promoting knowledge by providing educational and research facilities on tribal arts, traditions, culture, language, healing systems, customs, forestry activities, flora, fauna and technological advances related to the natural resources of the tribal areas.

Cooperation with universities and national and international organizations, particularly in the area of ​​conducting cultural studies and research on tribal communities. Formulate models of tribal development, publish reports and monographs, organize conferences and seminars on tribal issues, make political contributions in various fields. Take appropriate measures to nurture members of tribal communities who are self-governing, self-governing and supportive through access to higher education through their university. Dissemination and advancement of knowledge by providing teaching and research facilities in other disciplines they deem appropriate.

Take appropriate measures to encourage innovation in teaching and learning in interdisciplinary studies and research, paying special attention to improving the social, educational and economic conditions and well-being of the tribes registered in the Union of India.
