The Indian Navy is a balanced and cohesive three-dimensional force capable of operating on, above and below the sea surface and effectively protecting our national interests. The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) exercises operational and administrative control over the Indian Navy from the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defense (Navy).
It is assisted by the Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS) and three other Chiefs of Staff, namely the Vice Chief of Naval Staff (DCNS), the Chief of Staff (COP) and the Chief of Equipment (COM). . The Indian Navy’s most modern fleet consists of two fleets namely the Western Fleet based in Mumbai and the Eastern Fleet based in Visakhapatnam. In addition to the fleets, each flotilla is based in Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Port Blair (A and N Islands), which provide local naval defenses for their respective regions.
Navy vessels are also stationed in other ports on the east and west coasts of India and in island areas, ensuring a constant naval presence in areas of national importance. In addition, under each command there are various Naval Commanders (NOICs) responsible for the local naval defenses of ports under their jurisdiction.
Defense of Andaman & The Nicobars are under the joint responsibility of the three services and are managed by HQ, Andaman & Nicobar Command based in Port Blair. It is the only tripartite command of the Indian Armed Forces and is headed by the Commander-in-Chief who is appointed alternately between the three Armed Forces. The local naval defenses of the Lakshadweep group of islands are the responsibility of the Naval Commander Lakshadweep.
