The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was established on October 24, 1962. The ITBP currently monitors the 3,488 km long Indo-China border stretching from the Karakorum Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh.
In addition, the force also plays an important role in many national security missions and operations against left-wing extremism in the state of Chhattisgarh. Most ITBP border crossings (BOPs) are located between 9,000 and 18,800 feet, where temperatures plummet to minus 45 degrees Celsius during extreme winters.
ITBPs are the country’s specialized armed police forces who, in addition to intensive tactical training, train their personnel in various disciplines, including mountaineering and skiing, creating a distinctive image of the armed forces.
ITBP also conducts relief and rescue operations as a first responder 039; for natural disasters in the Himalayan region. The force has responded with hundreds of search, rescue and humanitarian operations over the years to help thousands of citizens in need due to various disasters.
