The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has its roots in the Pondicherry School of Medicine, founded in 1823 by the French government. In 1956 the foundation stone was laid for a new medical school and in 1964 a hospital opened. . JIPMER became a national agency of the Government of India’s Department of Health and Family Welfare in 2008.
It is a facility for the education, research and treatment of health patients. JIPMER covers an area of 192 hectares.The facility houses an administration building, a university center, a nursing school, seven hospital buildings, seven auxiliary service buildings and four apartment complexes. There are 12 main types of courses in medicine, nursing and related sciences, covering all disciplines of healthcare, from basic education to super specialist training.
