Sir Harcourt Butler himself was instrumental in bringing the plan to fruition quickly, through his energy in collecting subscriptions and his organizational skills. The college was completed and work on the first medical session began in October 1911, although it was not until 27 January 1912 that HM Sir John Prescot Hewett officially opened the college building. The college buildings consisted of a pathology and physiology, well, and forensic department. Construction of the actual hospital began shortly after the college was completed. Work on the Surgery was completed in April 1913 and the main building a few months later. ,232 beds were provided and in addition to the main hospital block there was an isolation block and separate pavilions.

The official opening of the King George Hospital and the opening of the new bridge across the Gomti River opposite the hospital was accomplished in January 1914 by His Excellency the Viceroy Lord Hardinge. The bridge replaced the older bridge built by King Asaf-ud-Daulah in 1780 and not demolished until 1911–1912.
