According to the local interpretation, the name Bhandara is a corruption of the name Bhanara. A reference to Bhanara is found in an inscription from 1100 AD attributed to Ratanpur. The area became British territory in 1853. In 1881 there were only two Tahsil in the district, namely Tirora and Sakoli. District continued to be part of the Central Provinces along with other districts of Vidarbha Region. With the reorganization of the states in 1956, the Bhandara district was transferred from Madhya Pradesh to the Bombay state established in the same year. With the establishment of the state of Maharashtra in 1960, it became part of the new state. At the time of the 1961 census, the county consisted of three Tahsil comprising 1,648 villages and 5 towns.

According to the 1971 census, there were three Tahsil in the county, consisting of 1,659 villages and five towns.During the 1971–81 decade, the number of Tahsil in the district remained unchanged until March 1, 1981.
