Solapur district has been ruled by various dynasties such as Andhrabhratyas, Chalukyas, Rashtrkutas, Yadavas and Bahamas. ‘SOLAPUR’ it should be derived from the two words “SOLA”, meaning sixteen, and “REIN”; it is the village. It was believed that the current city of Solapur comprised sixteen villages viz. Aadilpur, Ahmedpur, Chapaldev, Fatehpur, Jamdarwadi, Kalajapur, Khadarpur, Kandervkiwadi, Muhammadpur, Ranapur, Sandalpur, Shaikpur, Solapur, Sonalagi, Sonapur and Vaidakwadi.

However, recent research shows that the name SOLAPUR is not derived from a community of sixteen villages.The inscription of Shivayogi Shri. Siddheshwara from the time of Kalachuristis of Kalyani shows that this city was called Sonnalage; which ended up being pronounced “Sonnalagi”. The city was known as Sonnalagi until the time of the Yadavas.

A Sanskrit inscription from 1238 in Shake, after the fall of the Yadavas, found at Kamati na Mohol shows that the city was known as Sonalipur. One of the inscriptions found in the Solapur fortress shows that the city was called Sonalpur in the year , while another inscription on a well in the fortress shows that it was known as Sandalpur. During the Muslim period the city was known as Sandalpur.

It is therefore very likely that the name Solapur evolved over time and removed the “na”; called Sonalpur. Later the British rulers pronounced Solapur as Sholapur, hence the name of the district. Today’s Solapur district was part of Ahmednagar, Pune and Satara districts. In 1838 it became a sub-district of Ahmednagar.It included the Barshi, Mohol, Madha, Karmala, Indi, Hippargi and Muddebihal subdivisions.

In 1864 this sub-district was dissolved. In 1871 this district was reformed by merging the subdivisions. Solapur, Barshi, Mohol, Madha and Karmala as well as two sub-divisions of Satara district viz. Pandharpur, Sangola and 1875 also Malshiras subdivision was annexed in .After state reorganization in 1956, Solapur was incorporated into the state of Mumbai and became a full-fledged district of Maharashtra in 1960.
