ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE) is a permanent flagship institute of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) established on 2 July 1999 through a merger of JALMA Central Leprosy Institute (CJIL Field Unit), Avadi Institute. for Research in Medical Statistics (IRMS), Chennai. The broad objectives of the institute are to conduct epidemiological research, human resource development in epidemiology and biostatistics, networking of various ICMR and non-ICMR institutes at the national level for epidemiological purposes and consultancy.

The Institute is a WHO Collaborating Center for Leprosy Research and Epidemiology. The institute conducts a wide range of research activities, including intervention research, health systems research, evaluation of health plans and disease prevention programs, statistical methodology, epidemiological studies, and epidemiology. The institute houses the ICMR School of Public Health, which runs various academic programs.

ICMR-NIE recognized the PhD of Dr. MGR in Epidemiology from Tamil Nadu Medical University and PhD in Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Microbiology from Madras University. Sree Chitra Tirunali Institute of Medicine and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram recognizes the institute for the 2-year Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP-INDIA) leading to Master of Public Health (MPH).

The institute conducts other FETP projects at certificate level including 2-year Indian Epidemic Intelligence Service (India EIS), 2-year FETP Fellowship Non-Communicable Disease and 1-year FETP – Non-Communicable Disease. Periyar University is a recognized institute offering a 2-year Masters (MSc) in Biostatistics. The institute also runs several online courses in health research and related fields.
