The lignite deposit was accidentally discovered when a “brown substance” spilled with water in an artesian well in 1934 at the 620 hectare Rao Bahadur M. Jambulingam Mudaliar farm. He acted quickly and then contacted the British Raj, who sent geologists to Neiveli. It was later identified as “lignite”. It generously expands much of the vast land bank for ground exploration.
Through his efforts and the donation of 620 hectares of land to the Madras government. Rao Bahadur Statue TM Jambulinga Mudaliar The NLC has been a pioneer in the country’s energy sector for 62 years, holding the lion’s share of lignite production and a significant share of thermal power generation. It was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1956.
NLC operates four open pit lignite mines with a combined capacity of 30.6 million tonnes per year (MTPA) at Neyveli and Barsingsar; Six mine-fired lignite thermal power plants with a total capacity of 3,640 MW – in Neyveli and Barsingsar; and a 1,000 MW coal-fired power plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu through its subsidiary NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL), a joint venture between NLC and TANGEDCO (equity 89:11).
NLC recently commissioned a 1×500 MW unit at Neyveli, which is also the largest lignite boiler in Asia. NLC also entered the renewable energy sector with the commissioning of a 141MW solar PV system including a 1MW rooftop project in Neyveli and a 51MW wind farm in Kazhuneerkulam village in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu. The Company is also developing 1,209MW of solar power projects in Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu, of which 300MW has already been commissioned.NLC is targeting a total renewable energy capacity of 4,251 MW.
