Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), Singrauli is an important factor in meeting the energy needs of the country. NCL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited, Ministry of Coal, Government of India and a Mini Ratna (class I) company since 2007. NCL operates with the primary objective of producing coal with social upliftment, sustainability and environmental improvement in mind. It is an ISO 9001:2015, ISO 1 001:2015, ISO 5001:2018 certified company.

The main products of the organization are non-coking coal for classes G5-G13 and De-shale Coal and Coal Rejects. Approximately 86% of the coal produced is directed to the electricity sector. NCL’s share of the country’s total coal production is approximately 15%, ie. approximately 10% of the total electricity production. NCL was incorporated in November 1985 to include the Singraul coalfield carved out of Central Coalfields Ltd, headquartered at Singraul, Madhya Pradesh.

The area of ​​Singraul Coalfield is about 2202 square km. The coal mine can be divided into two basins viz. Moher sub-basin (312 sq km) and main Singraul basin (1890 sq km). NCL has a total coal reserve of 10.06 billion tonnes (Bt) (6.83 Bt in the Moher sub-area and 3.23 Bt in the main basin). A major part of Moher subdivision is located in Singraul district of Madhya Pradesh and a small part in Sonebhadra district of Uttar Pradesh.

All of NCL’s coal mining operations are currently concentrated in the Moher sub-region across 10 open pits. The Singraul main basin is located in the western part of the coalfield and is largely unexplored. NCL has 10 open pit mines using coal (sub-bituminous coal i.e. non-coking coal in grades G5 to G-13) with (i) Shovel-dumper combination and (ii) surface. miner Currently, NCL has 1239 units under production.
