Officially declared a new railway district on 1 April 1952, its origins date back to 3 March 1859. On 1 April 1952, the Northern Railway Zone was created connecting the Jodhpur Railway, the Bikaner Railway, the East Punjab Railway and the three areas of the East Indian Railway north-west of Mughalsarai (Uttar Pradesh). On 3 March 1859, the first passenger railway line Allahabad to Kanpur was opened under North India. In 186 , a broad gauge railway was built from Calcutta to Delhi.

In 186 , a railway line was built between Old Delhi and Meerut City railway station. Meerut Cant Railway Station was established by the British Government of India in about 1865 after the Mutiny of 1857 [citation needed] In 1866, trains began to run on the Howrah-Delhi route of the East Indian Railway Company.[3] In 1870, the Scinde, Punjab and Delhi Railway completed the 83-km Amritsar-Ambala-Jagadhri-Saharanpur-Ghaziabad line connecting Multan (now in Pakistan) to Delhi Junction.

In 1872, Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla Railway Station was established when the metro gauge railway was built from Delhi to Jaipur and Ajmer. It was a small station near Delhi as Delhi was then confined to a walled city. All metro trains from Delhi to (and terminating in) Rewar, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat passed through this station. The track from Delhi to Sarai Rohilla was double. From Sarai Rohilla to Rewar, one track was doubled to Rewar, from where single tracks diverged in five directions.

In 1876, the Rajputana State Railway built a metro gauge line from Delhi to Rewar and onwards to Ajmer.[2] In 1879, the Sind, Punjab and Delhi Railway completed the 83-km Amritsar-Ambala-Saharanpur-Ghaziabad line connecting Multan (now in Pakistan) with Delhi. In 188 , the Rajputana–Malwa Railway extended the 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) gauge Delhi–Rewari line to Bathinda. On March 9, 1885, the first train ran from Jodhpur Junction station to Lun. The New Jodhpur Railway was later merged with the Bikaner Railway to form the Jodhpur-Bikaner Railway in 1889. In 1891, the railway line between Jodhpur and Bikaner was completed. Later in 1900, it was connected to the Jodhpur-Hyderabad Railway (part of which is located in Pakistan), which connected Hyderabad in the Sindh province. Later in 192 , Jodhpur and Bikaner Railways operated as independent railways. After independence, part of the Jodhpur railway went to West Pakistan.
