Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is a public sector company under the administrative control of the Government of India’s Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The Company was incorporated in September 1 as a limited liability company under the Companies Act 1956 to operate nuclear power plants and carry out nuclear power projects to generate electricity in accordance with the plans and programs of the Government of India under the Atomic Energy Act . 1962.

NPCIL also has an interest in BHAVINI, another Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) PSU that runs a nationwide breeder reactor program. NPCIL is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of nuclear reactors. NPCIL is a MOU, a profitable and dividend-paying company with the highest credit rating (AAA ratings from CRISIL and CARE).

NPCIL currently operates 22 commercial nuclear reactors with an installed capacity of 6,780 MW. The reactor fleet consists of two Boiling Water Reactors (BWR), 18 Heavy Water Pressure Reactors (PHWR), including a 100 MW PHWR in Rajasthan owned by DAE, GOI, and two VVER reactors of 1,000 MW each. Block 3 of the Kakrapar Atomic Energy Project (KAPP) was synchronized to the grid on January 10, 2021 and is expected to start commercial operation soon. In addition to the with 700 MW KAPP Unit-3, nine other reactors with a total capacity of 7,500 MW are under construction at NPCIL.
