The 300-bed General Hospital was designed by Shri Y.B. inaugurated. Chavan, Union Secretary of the Interior on October 22, 1968, still serves as the main hospital block. On May 22, 1972, Shri B. laid the foundation for the very first medical college in the country of Manipur called Manipur Medical College.K. Nehru, then alongside Md. Governor of Manipur. Alimuddin, then Prime Minister. Medical College was formed as a joint venture between the Northeastern States.

On September 14, 1972, the name of the college was changed to Imphal Regional Medical College.The college was later renamed the North Eastern Regional Medical College under the direction of the North Eastern Regional Medical College Society. It has been under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India since August 1976 and is the only medical school run by the Home Office.

Almost 19 years later the college was renamed the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and its administration was taken over by the NEC, Ministry of DoNER, the Government of India on 1 April 1995. Exactly 12, years later, on the historic day of April 1, 2007, the Institute was transferred to the Government of India’s Department of Health and Family Welfare.

It is an institution of regional importance, which serves the needs of the Northeastern region in the field of medical education by conducting undergraduate and postgraduate studies and concentrating in one place educational institutions for the training of personnel of all major branches of medical specialties.RIMS is a 1,074-bed teaching hospital with state-of-the-art equipment and teaching facilities and a capacity for 100 undergraduate, 145 undergraduate and 6 graduate students.

The hospital normally services over 2.4 lakh outpatients and treats over 31,000 patients annually. It has access to WHO MEDLINE, Telemedicine Center, Regional Medical Library, Advanced Hospital Management & Information System, etc. Institute is affiliated with Manipur University, Imphal and meets certain standards of Medical Council of India.
