THDC India Limited is a leading for-profit energy and public sector company incorporated in July 1988 under the Companies Act 1956 as a limited liability company. A July 2010 delivery of electricity by the Indian government. , The capital of the company was divided between Govt. India and GoUP in a ratio of 75:25.

Pursuant to Strategic Sale of THDCIL, legal and beneficial ownership of equity held by the President of India in THDC India Limited which represents 74.496% of total paid up capital of THDCIL was transferred to NTPC Ltd. Equity in THDC India Limited is now shared between NTPC Limited and Government of UP in a ratio of 74.496 and 25.504. The Authorized Share Capital of the Company is ₹ 4000 Cr.

THDCIL started earning profits from first year (2006-07) of commercial operation of its maiden project i.e.Since then, Tehri HPP (1000 MW) and THDCIL have been consistently profitable. THDCIL was created for the sole purpose of development, maintenance and reinforcement; Maintenance of 2,400 MW Tehri Hydroelectric Complex (Tehri HPP-1000 MW, Tehri PSP-1000 MW and Koteshwar HEP-400 MW) and other hydroelectric projects.

The company has evolved into a multi-project organization with projects spread across several states and neighboring Bhutan. It was also involved in generating electricity from renewable energy sources and combined heat and power plants. Currently THDCIL has a portfolio of 10, projects (hydro, thermal, wind and solar) with a total capacity of 4,516 MW.

This includes 1,587 ongoing projects (Tehri HPP-1,000MW, Koteshwar HEP-400MW, Dhukwan SHP-24MW, Patan Wind Farm-50MW, Devbhumi Dwarka Wind Farm-63MW and Kasaragod Solar Power Plant-50MW) and 2,764 projects MW under construction (PSP Tehri – 1,000 MW, VPHEP 444 MW and Khurja 1,320 MW).
