The University of Hyderabad (IAST: Hydarābād visvavidyālayamu) is a leading public central research university located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. Founded in 197 , this primarily residential campus has more than 5,000 students and 00 faculty members from various disciplines. The Governor of Telangana State is the ex-officio Chancellor of the university while the President of India is the Visiting Officer of the University.

The university was founded in 1973 based on the six-point scheme. The first vice-chancellor of the university was Gurbaksh Singh, an organic chemist from Banaras Hindu University, from 197 to 1979. Shri B D Jatti was the first Chancellor of the university. In January 2015, the University of Hyderabad received the Visitor’s Award from the President of India for Best City Center University.

The university is located on 2300 acres in Gachibowli. The campus is rich in flora and fauna with more than 73 flowering plants, ten species of mammals, fifteen species of reptiles and 220 species of birds. The University is recognized as an Institution of Eminence (IoE) as per the UGC (Declaration of Government Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) 2017 guidelines for public institutions.

The campus is spread over 2,300 hectares and has a large forest cover with two perennial and three seasonal lakes and rock formations typical of the Deccan. It is home to 73 plants, 10 mammals, 15 reptiles and 220 bird species (last count). Famous animals include wild goats, hares, peacocks, hog deer and wild boar. The campus also has a protected megalith.

A study covering more than three decades (1990-2010) reported that 315 plant species were used in traditional Indian medicine on campus. 39 plant species belonging to the endangered group. These lists are the result of on-campus field research by students and faculty. The university plans to protect the forest and wetlands by establishing a bio-reserve.
