Very often known as the cultural capital of Gujarat, Vadodara may not have had a colorful history like Bombay Calcutta and great empire builders like Delhi. But then, unlike these cities, its history begins somewhere in the middle of the Pleistocene. There is evidence of Early Paleolithic man at several sites within a 10-20 km radius in the Mahijoki Valley. Northeast of present Vadodara. At the beginning of the Christian era, a small village seems to have arisen on the right bank of the river Vishwamistri.
It was known as Ankotakka (now Akota). The town of Ankottakka was formed during the rule of the Guptas and the Vallabhis. But a severe flood in 600 AD. forced the inhabitants to leave the village and move to the eastern side of Ankotaka. This formed the nucleus of the new village name Vadpadraka, perhaps due to the abundance of banana trees, which are still relatively abundant today.
The development of Vadodara was rapid from the 11th century to the 1 th century AD. in 1500 AD, when the then Sultan of Gujarat Muhamad Begda gave Vadodara Jagir to his son Prince Khail Khan, he built the present day Vadodara Fort.
The fort was strong and well built, so keeping in mind the security considerations, residents of the nearby villages came to live here. Then several lakes were built. During the next two centuries, the area next to the fortress was also inhabited. Vadodara is later inhabited during the Maratha period as evidenced by coins and pottery.
For the people of Vadodara today, its history begins with Sayajirao III. Vadodara’s identity can be summed up by its composite culture, Catholicism and general enlightenment. There is one person identified in the Vadodara identity who is Sayajirao III. One cannot talk about any part of the city without referring to him. The identity of Vadodara is the contribution of Sayajirao.
During the rule of Sayajirao, Vadodara prospered so much that it was second only to Nizam’s Hyderabad among the capitals of the country. He implemented several reforms that included organization of electricity distribution in Vadodara state, mechanization of production units, voluntary and compulsory training of cooperatives and introduction of prohibition. That Vadodara is now on the cultural, educational and economic map of the country is largely due to Sayajirao III.
Whatever legacy this city has is the legacy of a great ruler who shaped the character of his subjects. After a glorious life of more than 76 eventful years, this great hero, who was adopted at the age of 12 by the widow of Maharaja Khanderao, took his heavenly ascension in 1939.
Vadodara witnessed the establishment of medium and large scale industries. The city is making great progress in the field of economy and has huge industrial complexes and public enterprises like Gujarat Refinery, Petrochemical Corporation of India, Gujarat State Fertilizers, Heavy Water Project, Petroleum and Natural Gas Commission etc. Today, the city is located on both banks of the Vishwamistri River and is famous as the cultural capital of Gujarat and a center of educational activities. The population of the city will soon be around 1.9 million.
