The campus of the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences is housed in the former Allipur Prison buildings. Indian freedom fighters including Sri. Chakravarthi Rajgopalachary, Sri. vvGiri, Sri. Bejawada Gopala Reddy, Sri. Ghantasala Venkateshwara Rao and Sri. Tekur Subramanya were imprisoned in this prison. This prison closed in 1958 and the old buildings and entire 173 acre grounds (0.70 km2) were donated by the government to found the Medical College at Bellary in 1961.

To remedy the shortcomings of the medical college, an autonomous institution, the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary, was established. in 1996. This medical school overcame its staff shortage by hiring new staff. Medical College Hospital opened in 1966 and has 680 beds.

The District Hospital is located in the heart of the city and covers 15 acres (61,000 m²) with 210 beds for pediatric, gynecological and maternity cases.A 20-person Infosys unit was recently added to treat cases of Japanese encephalitis. In order to unite all departments under one roof, to better coordinate teaching and to treat patients better, these two departments of the Clinic for Gynecology and Paediatrics will be relocated to the VIMS campus later this year on the new VIMS campus.

Government Wellesly VG & The Chest Hospital was founded in 1929 on an 81,000 m² property and has 280 beds. The municipal health center in the heart of the city was built in 1999 and treats 120 to 140 outpatients every day.
